Lucifer, Morning Son

I believe a lot of Mourning Sun is the story of the fall [and rise] of Lucifer; the Morning Son.

[In particular, Shroud, Straight To The Light and the title track, Mourning Sun] I have stated previously that I really do not like this album; that opinion has not changed. What I do give credit to McCoy for is the lyrics, they are utterly brilliant and quite Homeric on some of the tracks. The borrowing of lines of text from the Book of Enoch, the Necronomicon, The Book Of The Law, George Orwell, Matthew 24:34 , Still Falls the Rain by Edith Sitwell [et al] by McCoy is clear, Still Life, Dead But Dreaming, Psychonaut, Shroud, Penetration, Pazuzu all have quotes from these sources, to name only a few and Mourning Sun is no different! Just the title on its own is enough to pique ones interest!

In Shroud [Exordium] McCoy whispers – Come home, Malach now, to your father, now, cover his face so he may not see the light, that’s the one, Malach mananya, I return you – [NOTE: the laughter of the father is almost certainly a reference to God, the father] Malach mananya [manunyah, or words to that effect]: Malach is a Hebrew name for a messenger and/or angel. Regarding the word “mananya” I cannot find this word or any other that resembles it in the Hebrew dictionary, it could be Akkadian [I’m sure it is, I have the Akkadian dictionary, but there are hundreds of pages, finding it may be a problem!], I am guessing it is an ancient phonetic spelling and that these words combined refer to Lucifer [Morning Star, Light bringer, Morning Sun/Son] who was banished from heaven. Lucifer, star of the morning [the morning son] became Satan when he fell to the earth.

McCoy himself has said

One can read so many things into the title – I have my own entirely unique interpretation for it , however I don’t wish to reveal it. I don’t want to prescribe to anyone how they should understand the title.

If you do a little of research into this subject, you will learn a few surprising things. An example is the Arabic name for Lucifer, which is Azazel.

Book of Enoch, Chapter X

  1. Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spake, and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech, and said to him: 2. Go to Noah and tell him in my name “Hide thyself!” and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it. 3. And now instruct him that he may escape and his seed may be preserved for all the generations of the world.’ 4. And again the Lord said to Raphael: ‘Bind Azâzêl hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dûdâêl, and cast him therein. 5. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. 6. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire. And heal the earth which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of the earth, that they may heal the plague, and that all the children of men may not perish through all the secret things that the Watchers have disclosed and have taught their sons. 8. And the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azâzêl: to him ascribe all sin.’ 9.

The name Azazel means The Left Hand of God. He is known by many names; we know him as Lucifer, the morning son, son of the dawn and light bringer.

Ezekiel 28:12–17

You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God…You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created…

McCoy sings:

Cover his face
so that he may not see the light

Yeah, we are fallen like the mourning sun. Yeah, we are fallen like the mourning sun.
We’ve fallen like rain, I’ve been waiting for the day. And the light has made, I will rise again
And our wings will unfold And be painted like gold.
And I saved my soul, I’m alive again, morning son I will rise again like the morning sun

I will fly again…Look up, look down. Look up, look down. Look up, look down. Look up

Old King James Bible, Isaiah 14:12

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

In a modern translation from the original Hebrew

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to the heavens

Lucifer is regarded within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the pre-mortal name of the devil. Mormon theology teaches that in a heavenly council, Lucifer rebelled against the plan of God the Father and was subsequently cast out. The Church’s scripture reads:

And this we saw also, and bear record, that an angel of God who was in authority in the presence of God, who rebelled against the Only Begotten Son whom the Father loved and who was in the bosom of the Father, was thrust down from the presence of God and the Son, and was called Perdition, for the heavens wept over him—he was Lucifer, a son of the morning. And we beheld, and lo, he is fallen! is fallen, even a son of the morning! And while we were yet in the Spirit, the Lord commanded us that we should write the vision; for we beheld Satan, that old serpent, even the devil, who rebelled against God, and sought to take the kingdom of our God and his Christ—Wherefore, he maketh war with the saints of God, and encompasseth them round about.
